Alexandra Momin is an artist interested in the encounter between different mediums and the evocative allusions that emerge from their overlap. Fascinated by the meeting of different forms, colors, and textures, she combines various mediums – painting, film, photography, screen printing – to create suggestive images of environments that point to a new reality while alluding to deeper realities in search of resolution. Whether through several or all media layered upon each other, her eye is squarely focused on the emotional power of form and movement - how they represent human complexity, promise, and alienation. She attempts to capture the mystery and magic of the frantic movement that embodies our contemporary lives, while inviting the viewer to reflect on how her textural interplay reveal the intimacy and unruliness of our inner lives.
She uses literal and abstract renderings of her experiences to challenge us to make sense of the world. In search of the deeper realities that animate our subconscious selves, she unsettles our way of seeing and encourages us to look afresh at the surfaces before us. As the New York Times once observed about her photography: She “seems to forsake social experiences altogether in favor of double exposures that illuminate ordinary landscapes with brilliant flashes, epiphanies perhaps.”*
Alexandra Momin was born in Belleville, New Jersey, and completed a degree in Fine Art at New Jersey City University, May 1998. She currently lives and works in New York City. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Europe, notably Then She Did at Plaxall Gallery, Long Island City, NY (2018), As The Eye Is Formed at Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, NY (2013); Dividing Light, Measuring Darkness at Curious Matter Gallery, Jersey City, NJ (2011); and Luna Nera/Post Industrial Baroques Live Media Art Exhibition & Concert at Raum 18, Berlin, Germany (2009). In 2018 she had a solo exhibition, Converging Paths, Divergent Destinations at Urban Studio Unbound Gallery, Yonkers, NY. Her work has also appeared in Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas, by Rebecca Solnit and Joshua Jelly-Shapiro (2016); Streaming Festival, Sixth Edition, The Hague, Netherlands (2011); Rafskinna Magazine, Reyjaavik, Iceland (2009); Mudfish (2000). Since December 2011, she has been the resident photographer for Mobile Mondays at The Bowery Electric. An inveterate music lover, she has toured Europe as opening DJ for MRC Riddims; scored a commercial for MTV2; directed the short film “The Sea Has Fallen” to accompany the band Destructo Swarmbots’ musical score; made music videos for the bands Dälek, The Lost Crusaders, and Ifwhen; created or co-created album art for BKGD Audio, Third Culture Kings, Oddateee, Dälek, and Ifwhen; and created video Installations for the experimental jazz duo, Tarana (2016), New World Stages’ musical performance, “Becoming Relevant” (2012), and various DJ's throughout New York City.
